What size of guitar should I get?

Guitars come in four sizes. 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 and full size. You should try them for size to see which is most appropriate. Make sure you can touch your first finger and your thumb around the neck, and that you can reach all the strings with your right hand. The most important thing is that it is comfortable to hold and play.

What type of guitar to choose?

If you are picking a guitar up for the first time, it would be best to go for nylon strings. Steel strings are harder on the fingers for a beginner. This can put you off playing the guitar if you are going to get sore fingers for the first few months. Nylon strings are the most comfortable and they have a softer sound. Do you need a solid top?

Some teachers request a solid top guitar. These guitars have a stronger construction and better quality tone. See our solid top guitars.

Electric guitars are the cool looking guitars with the big sound. Uamplified, they don't pick up the subtle mistakes that everyone makes as a beginner. This could lead to bad technique in the future.
