What size of guitar should I get?

When choosing a first guitar, it's vital to get the right size for your child. It might be tempting to buy a guitar that your child will grow into, especially if he shows signs of being musical. But one size doesn't fit all!

The most important thing is that the guitar is comfortable to hold and play.

Learning can be both painful and frustrating if you Four different sizes of guitarsget the wrong size for your child's hands and the wrong strings. Guitars come in 4 sizes. 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 and full size.

Here's a rough Guitar Size Chart

  • 1/4 size would suit 2-5 year olds

  • 1/2 size may suit 5-8 year olds

  • 3/4 size would suit 8-12 year olds    

  • 4/4 or full size guitar would be suitable for 12 year olds to adults

This can only be an estimate. You should try them for size to see which is most appropriate. Make sure you can touch your first finger and your thumb around the neck, and that you can reach all the strings with your right hand.

What type of guitar should I choose?

If you are picking a guitar up for the first time, it would be best to go for nylon strings. Steel strings are harder on the fingers for a beginner. This can put you off playing the guitar if you are going to get sore fingers for the first few months. Nylon strings are the most comfortable and they have a softer sound. You can move on to other guitars and strings from here.

What about colour of guitar?

Apart from the traditional natural looking guitars, there are some cool colours to choose from too. You can buy pink and purple guitars. The classical guitars also come in blue, black and pink.choice of coloured guitars

Do I need a solid top guitar?

Some teachers request a solid top guitar. These guitars have a stronger construction and better quality tone.

In order to hear the music an electric guitar makes, you will also need to buy at least a cable and an amplifier to go with it. After you have chosen the electric guitar you will need to look into getting some extra equipment.
